April 3, 1966 - USC legenday pitcher Tom Seaver signed a contract with the Mets for a reported $50,000 bonus. Seaver was originally a selection of the Atlanta Braves in the January 1966 free-agent draft, and thus Seaver signed on with Atlanta's Richmond farm club a month later, after the start of USC's baseball schedule. A ruling on the violation gave Richmond a $500 fine and forbade Atlanta from signing Seaver for a minimum of three seasons. Thus, Seaver was also declared ineligible at the college level, so an unprecedented special draft is held. Three clubs willing to match Richmond's $40,000 contract the Indians, Phillies, and Mets participate. New York's name is drawn from a hat as the winner. Tom Seaver would go on to wear the Number 41 with the Mets and was a major part of the 1969 Miracle Mets story as the ball club won the World Series after a remarkable post All-Star Game turn around.
