Walt Bellamy

Born July 24, 1939, n New Bern, North Carolina, was Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Center Walt Bellamy. He played college basketball at Indiana University and holds the school records for most rebounds in a season (649) and most double-doubles in a career (59). Then after some great seasons for the Hoosiers moved to the pro ranks. Walt was an NBA All-Star 1962–65; NBA Rookie of Year 1962; Olympic gold medal winner at the games in 1960.

That takes us to the selection of the 15 Greatest Players to have worn the Number 8 with a list of the top players that as of January 1, 2022 have worn the number in the NBA on game days.

  1. Moses Malone - played the position of Center and Forward wearing the number 8 on the Milwaukee Bucks (1992-93) for 2 seasons as he scored 29580 points, dished out 1936 assists, crashed the boards for 17834 rebounds, blocked 1889 shots and averaged 20.3 points per contest played for his career.
  2. Kobe Bryant - played the position of G-F wearing the number on the Los Angeles Lakers (1997-06) for 10 seasons as he scored 33643 points, dished out 6306 assists, crashed the boards for 7047 rebounds, smacked down 640 opponent's shots and averaged 25 points a game for his career.
  3. Walt Bellamy - lined up at Center wearing the number on the Chicago Packers (1962), Chicago Zephyrs (1963), Baltimore Bullets (1964-66), Detroit Pistons (1969-70), New York Knicks (1966-69), Atlanta Hawks (1970-74), and New Orleans Jazz (1975) for 11 years as he provided career 20941 points, created 2544 assists, fought for 14241 rebounds, blocked 48 shots, and averaged 20.1 points per game for his career.
  4. Dwight Howard - played the Center position with this jersey number for the Atlanta Hawks (2017) for 1 season as he registered 19485 points, passed for 1676 assists, hauled down 14627 rebounds, swatted away 2228 shots averaged 15.7 points each for his career.
  5. George Gervin - was a Guard/Forward donning the number on the Chicago Bulls (86) for 1 Pro Basketball seasons as he scored 26595 career points, helped out with 2798 assists, found the ball for 5602 rebounds, blocked 1047 opposing teams' shots, averaging 1047 points/game for his career.
