The image of the 1923 Clemson Tigers football team is courtesy of Wikimedia Commons. The image is really striking, and little notes make us believe that the photo was taken long after the season in 1924 we think at their homefiled of Riggs Stadium. The Tigers ended the campaign with a respectable 5-2-1 record overall, 1-1-1 in the Southern Conference, under the guidance of Head Coach Bud Saunders in his first season at the helm. Butch Holohan was the team captain.
The uniforms are typical of the period, long sweaters with canvas trousers. One intereseting feature is the construction of the goal posts they are seated under in the upper left and right-hand corners of the image. The posts themselves are in the ground a yard or two beyound the lines but the crossbar and uprights are supported with some clever craftsmanship of lumber, so that they hover over top the endline for player safety.
