False Findings of Baseball Origins Posted

April 2, 1907 - The Baseball Powers of the era at the urging of baseball fans, decided to find the root history of the game. Thus, the Mills Commission was created to determine who invented the game of baseball. Spearheaded by the third President of the National League, Abraham Mills, they looked to find out and memorialize the origins of baseball. At the urging of A. G. Spalding, a baseball man who founded a sporting goods empire, the Civil War hero, Abner Doubleday was erroneously connected as the founder of the National Pastime. This was the accepted narrative for the origin of baseball for almost a century until researchers set the record straight.

Who invented baseball

Baseball’s official historian, John Thorn, sets the record straight on the game’s earliest days ... in the 1700s. Yes, that’s right, baseball started decades before Abner Doubleday supposedly created the game at Cooperstown — and it only became popular when professional gamblers took an interest. — www.npr.org

The ’Secret History’ Of Baseball’s Earliest Days by NPR interviews Official Baseball historian John Thorn as he reveals that the April 2, 1907 decision of the Mills Commission to Christin Abner Doubleday as the founding father of baseball was flat-out wrong.
