Soccer Numbers made famous

Do you wonder about some of the most famous numbers in soccer today? We got you! Here are some famous soccer jersey numbers used by famous soccer players.

Jersey Numbers of Famous Soccer Players in the World

Soccer is such a popular sport that many fans keep up with everything the prominent players do. Some devoted fans even celebrate their favourite player's birthdays and attempt to emulate their lifestyle. They believe that soccer jersey numbers have meanings. They purchase jerseys of their favourite players and consider the jersey number soccer their lucky number.

Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday were the first teams to use numbered jerseys in professional soccer in 1928. Starting players were assigned numbers 1 through 11 based on their location on the field at the time, with replacements, who were not permitted until 1965, given higher numbers.

Fixed numbers were originally assigned to each player during the 1954 World Cup. However, the habit of using 1 - 11 was not abandoned until the 1993 - 94 season, at least in England. The squad number system is now used by the majority of professional football leagues.

Some soccer player numbers have become more renowned than others, either because of the players that wore them on their backs or their relationship with a noteworthy match or event. Here are some well-known soccer jersey numbers used by well-known players:

Number 1

Goalkeepers have traditionally worn the number one, and some of the best to do so include Lev Yashin, Dino Zoff, Gordon Banks, Manuel Neuer, and Gianluigi Buffon.

Russian Lev Yashin is the only goalie to have won the Ballon d'Or and was named World Soccer's best team and Russia's most recognised athlete of the twentieth century. He had over 270 career clean sheets and over 150 penalty saves.

Gordon Banks was recognised as not just the finest goalie in England but also the world for a decade. He was instrumental in England's World Cup victory in 1966. Four years later, in Mexico, he made probably one of the greatest saves to deny Pelé in England's World Cup group game against Brazil.

Dino Zoff is the oldest World Cup winner, leading Italy to victory in Spain in 1982. He made 112 international appearances for his homeland and still maintains the record for the longest consecutive minutes without surrendering a goal at the European Championship, including qualifying.

Number 7

Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal wears the number 7. Ronaldo is widely viewed as one of the top players in the world. Some believe he is overrated, and fans like him for his beauty and the fact that he shares the same name as Brazil's Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a fantastic player who has contributed significantly to the game of soccer. When he started his career, David Beckham wore the number 7 jersey, but he no longer does.

Number 9

Although this number is no longer well-known, it was formerly. Ronaldo, a Brazilian footballer, wore the number 9. He has already made way for Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but he was a standout in his day. He was a member of Brazil's World Cup-winning team in 2002.

Number 10

The number 10 jersey is now only worn by the best players. It was worn by soccer stars such as Pele, Maradona, and Zidane, to mention a few. It is worn by Lionel Messi, Kaka, Ronaldinho, and Rooney, among others. Jersey number 10 is now considered a legacy and is only awarded to those who earn it. Messi, Kaka, Rooney, and Ronaldinho are definitely merited since they have given the honour to their respective countries. Players that wear the number 10 are recognised as exceptional players who have altered the game in some manner and set the bar for future players.

Number 23

When David Beckham went from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2003, the number 23 became famous. He was linked with the number 7 shirt at Old Trafford, but when he got at Real, he discovered that it was held by club icon Ral. Instead, Beckham looked to NBA Basketball and retired icon Michael Jordan. They had worn the number 23 with distinction throughout their career.

When Beckham came to the Los Angeles Galaxy, he brought shirt number 23 with him since he had had success with it in Spain. He then wore 32 - 23 reversed when playing for AC Milan and PSG.

Christian Eriksen, Danny Welbeck, and Jamie Carragher are just three players that have worn the number 23 on the back of their shirts after Beckham.

Bottomline

There you have it. These are some of the most prominent soccer jersey numbers today. A soccer jersey number has meaning, especially to the players and fans. It is embedded in the fabric of sportsmanship, like the names of people. So whenever a fan sees a jersey number of a famous player, the soccer game is even more appreciated and loved.
