In this edition of the Sports Break, we cover the top events in sports history along with the players and athletes that were a part of them on October 31. As a bonus, we place the jersey number worn at the time with the athlete as well.


Daily Digits October 31

Sports history is made every day of the year. We will preserve at least a small sampling from some great athletes every day based on the uniform number they wore.

33 - 11 - 41 - 36 - 41 - 47 - 35

October 31, 1943 - Washington Redskin Quarterback, Number 33, "Slingin' " Sammy Baugh passed for 6 touchdowns agains the Brooklyn Dodgers in a 48-10 route.

October 31, 1950 - The Big Cat, Earl Lloyd became the first African-American to play a game in the NBA, scoring 6 points on debut for the Washington Capitols. Mr Lloyd would wear the Number 11, with the Syracuse Nationals.

October 31, 1967 - San Francisco Giants Mike McCormick, wearing Number 41 won the  National League Cy Young Award

October 31, 1972 - Gaylord Perry of the Cleveland Indians, who wore Number 36 won the  American League Cy Young award

October 31, 1973 - Tom Seaver, Number 41 of the New York Mets won the National League Cy Young Award

October 31, 2014 - Greg Maddux (Number 31), Tom Glavine (Number 47 ), Frank Thomas (Number 35), Bobby Cox (Atlanta Braves Manager), Tony La Russa (Manager) and Joe Torre (Manager) were inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown, NY

"Slinging Sammy" Baugh, new addition to the Washington Redskins, the Texas Christian U. star is rated as one of the greatest of this generation as far as the passing game goes. Sammy's most recent feat was the practical winning alone of the Green Bay all stars game at Chicago with a series of sensational passes, he is 24 years old, weighs 190, and is six feet tall, followers of professional football will hear a lot from Sammy his fal, 9/11/37 from publisher Harris & Ewing.
