Daily Digits May 11

Sports history is made every day of the year. We will preserve at least a small sampling from some great athletes every day based on the uniform number they wore.

May 11, 1897 - Washington Senators catcher Charles Duke Farrell threw out 8 Baltimore runners that attempted to steal a base in one game per the Reach Guide Publication in 1898. SARR.org challenges this stating that though he had eight assists in the game for outs they can verify only 6 of these at second base. A lofty number none-the less.

May 11, 1919 - Cincinnati Reds pitcher, Hod Eller tossed a no-hit shutout against the St Louis Cardinals, in a Red 6-0 victory.

Eller was not the only MLB pitcher turning down batters that day...

May 11, 1919 - Washington Senators future Baseball Hall of Fame ace Walter Johnson pitched 12 scoreless innings in a famous 0-0 duel with Jack Quinn of the New York Yankees at the Polo Grounds.

May 11, 1997 - New York Rangers, Number 9, Adam Graves scored 14:08 into overtime to eliminate the New Jersey Devils in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Here is an item from Hockey Writers website

May 11, 1975 - Denis Potvin (Number 5) and Gerry Hart (Number 2) scored in the Islanders a 2-1 win over the Flyers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals. Number 1Glenn Resch made 28 saves to send the series back to Philadelphia, where the Flyers won to move on to their second straight Stanley Cup Final.

Basketball Hall of Fame Moments for May 11

The website of NBA.com offers these nuggets of history for the day.

May 11, 1980 - The Dr. J Amazing lay up. The NBA.com website calls it "One of the NBA’s most memorable moves." The site describes it best as they tell us Number 6, Julius Erving, of the Philadelphia 76ers, started out on the right side and drove past Lakers’ forward Mark Landsberger (Number 54) along the baseline. As Erving elevated toward the basket, Number 33, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar came over to block a layup attempt. Erving changed course in mid-air and floated behind the backboard to the other side of the basket then wrapped his right arm behind Kareem and laid in a reverse layup. “Here I was trying to win a championship and my mouth just dropped open,” recalled Lakers’ guard, Number 32, Magic Johnson, then a rookie. “I thought, ‘What should we do? Should we take the ball out or should we ask him to do it again?’” The Lakers would win the series in six games.

May 11, 1992 - NBA legends Bob Lanier (Number 16) and Connie Hawkins (Number 42) and long-time NBA coach Jack Ramsay were among nine individuals inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
