Daily Digits April 27

Sports history is made every day of the year. We will preserve at least a small sampling from some great athletes every day based on the uniform number they wore.

3 - 4 - 5 - 32 - 12 - 11 - 30

April 27, 1926 -  Mel Ott, who during his career wore Numbers 3, 4 and 5 (but not until 1932), made his first appearance a game in the New York Giants' 9-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

April 27, 1930 - This sounds crazy! Chicago White Sox 1st baseman Bud Clancy didn't handle ball at all in a 9 inning game vs St Louis Browns. The Sox won the game 2-1 with not one defensive touch by their first baseman. Pitchers Alphonse Thomas and McKain recorded 8 strikeouts while the rest of the defense of the Sox creaed the rest of the outs.

April 27, 1961 - The NFL officially recognized the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Basketball Hall of Fame Moments for April 27

The website of NBA.com offers these nuggets of history for the day.

April 27, 1983 - San Antonio guard Johnny Moore, wearing Number 00, handed out 20 assists, at the time a playoff record, in the Spurs’ 126-109 win over Denver. Magic Johnson (Number 32) and John Stockton (Number 12) now share the record of 24.

April 27, 1984 - Number 11, Isiah Thomas and Number 30, Bernard King engaged in a great playoff shoot-out in Game 5 of the 1984 Eastern Conference first round playoff series won by New York 127-123 in overtime. King scored 12 of his game-high 44 points in the final 5:12 of the fourth quarter but Thomas stole his thunder by tallying Detroit’s final 14 points in a span of just 1:34 to send the game into overtime where each star had four points. “Sometimes Zeke is magical — you saw it tonight,” Pistons coach Chuck Daly said of Thomas.
